Summer Experiences

I had an evening walk in the fields and visited the cow boys (not pictured). It was a cloudy day, not too warm.

I found a good amount of ripe wild strawberries in my garden today, which was nice.

some ripe and some unripe wild strawberry fruit on the plant

a straight path through a field of unripe wheat

view from the edge of a canola field towards the sunset. there are a lot of blooming grasses on the field edge in the foreground. the canola plants are just about done flowering. the setting sun is behind some clouds, giving them a peach coloured glow.

pink flowerheads of wild yarrow, many tiny flowers in an umbrella shape

These are Aglais io caterpillars. I've been looking for these for a while now and finally found some today. They live on stinging nettles, which there are plenty of currently. I've yet to see an adult of them this year, since I've been almost exclusively walking in the evening.

a lot of Aglais io caterpillars on a stinging nettle. the caterpillars are black with orangeish-brown feet, many spikes, and lots of tiny white dots. they are all crowding together.
