These are buckeye or horse chestnuts, Aesculus hippocastanum. They aren't edible, but they contain saponins, so they can be used as laundry detergent. They are also a popular material for kids' autumn crafts :3 I don't know if squirrels eat them, deer do like them though. This particular tree is close to the houses so there haven't been any deer coming for the fruit.
