It was another mild, dry day. I saw even more frogs in my pond than yesterday, and a newt, too. My radishes are starting to sprout in veggie bed 1. I already have to water the garden quite a bit because there hasn't been any rain lately.

Frogs and Flowers

It was a beautiful mild spring day. I'm having issues with my energy level and focus, that make it hard to keep up with daily posting, but I do try. There were a lot of frogs today in my little garden pond. I only ever remember seeing two at a time last spring, today there were at least six of them. I hope they're doing ok because the water quality in that thing is probably not great.

Snow Day

Saturday, January 4th, 2025 11:27 pm
halcyon_garden: (winter2)
It snowed a bunch overnight. The day was pretty cold so it all stuck around.

garden entrance gateway in the snow

tangled wild looking plum orchard, bare trees in the snow

I walked between the fields. I saw a lot of animal tracks: rabbit, hare, fox, feral cat, various rodents, deer.

the field covered in snow and a line of trees on the side of it, the sky is pastel coloured behind the clouds

three large oak tree trunks with snow snicking to them

the path between the snow covered fields, distant treeline, bare oak tree branches hanging into the shot from above

the trees along the stream between snowy fields, seen from a distance, cloudy pastel sky above

the small stream, water appearing dark between snowy banks with dry grasses on the side

deer hill with the small group of trees on top, the field covered in snow, low light in the late afternoon

a small spruce tree in front of some half timber houses, it has holiday lights on it and is covered in snow, low light in the evening

It was a beautiful winter day with an incredible sunset.

the wooden entrance gateway to my garden in the evening light. there are large bare cherry tree trunks and branches overhead. the sky is light pastel blue and peach coloured

sunset over the light green field. the sky has some light wispy transparent clouds thinly covering large parts of it, and is a gradient from light blue to yellow and peach/orange. there is mist in the distance.

a large tree, I think an oak, bare and silhouetted against the warm coloured sunset sky, with some houses and smaller trees in the background

a small group of young trees in a meadow next to the fields, mostly birch and spruce. the sky is colourful behind them.

a tiny pond in the meadow between the young trees, with very little icy water in it.

sunset over the path between the fields. there are intensely pink and peach coloured clouds, and some yellow.

The light in the sky in the below picture is probably a planet, I didn't check but I think Jupiter?

the view of the sky on the opposite side of the sunset. there are some distant wind turbines with red lights on them, wispy pinkish clouds in the dark blue sky, and a single light dot.

post sunset sky over the fields, distant tree line and powerlines. the sky is a gradient of dark blue to yellow and peach.

Is This Winter

It was a cloudy day with a bit of rain.

trees against the evening sky

little brown and tan polypore mushrooms on a log

bark of an old plum tree with a little bit of moss and lichen on it

the little stream that goes through the big pasture, with bare trees and dry plants next to it

cloudy sky over the fields

It was a grey, gloomy, soggy day. Well, as always, I gotta go on a walk.

little fuzzy tan mushrooms growing out of a moss covered log. they look like little clam shells.

decomposing bark of an old plum tree, with a lot of the outer layer missing and evidence of bug activity

vibrant green moss growing on an old tree trunk

bark on the trunk of a large oak tree. there is moss and lichen growing on it, creating reddish and green tones.

wild rose hips by the edge of a field, close up of 2 bright red fruit

I went out into the fields. It is now the season to find animal tracks in the mud. These are badger tracks. I also saw deer tracks and the actual far away deer to match them.

3 footprints of a badger in the mud, they have 5 toes and large claws

a very old very large willow tree by the edge of the field. it has several large trunks and looks very wild.

a green field on a gloomy day. it is overgrown with plants low on the ground, probably a type of Phacelia. there are powerlines in the distance. the sky is just grey.

the little stream, seen from above. there is a lot of foliage around it, some of it is colourful, green, red and yellow

some little light brown stemless mushrooms growing on a decaying branch.

the soggy wet bark of a large tree. there is a lot of small star-shaped moss growing on it and some little patches of bright yellow-green lichen.

remnants of dried tan seedheads of some plant, the shape is similar to fireworks

There has been much to see today.

It was another mild, dry day.

it's the sky close to sunset, light blue with a few clouds, and a bunch of partially bare trees

a single little daisy flower in the grass

I visited the cow boys on the far side of the big pasture. Fernando was coming to the stream for a drink.

a boy who is a cow named Fernando getting a drink from the stream, he is looking up and sticking his tongue into one nostril.

Fernando the cow boy standing by the stream and looking at me. he is cute.

Cows are in fact very flexible and can reach a lot of spots on their body with their tongue.

Fernando the cow seen from the tail end. he has turned his head back towards the camera and licking his hip area in a stunning display of bovine flexibility.

I foraged a bunch of dandelion leaves and grass for my large pet rabbits. They eat a lot. It is quite impressive.

my sweet large pet rabbit Juniper eating some foraged greens. Haru the other large pet rabbit is in the background.

Haru and Juniper eating grass from a pile. they look silly.

I was watching the birds today around noon. They were being very lively and active. I saw about 10 different species. This green woodpecker came very close to the window, and they once again proved that birdwatching goes both ways.

a green woodpecker hanging onto the trunk of an old plum tree. they have olive coloured feathers, a red patch on their head and a dark eye mask. they have an inquisitive expression.

I went for my walk in the early evening.

the entrance archway to my garden in the autumn sunlight. everything is still green. there are large cherry tree branches growing above the path.

There are still a few things growing in my garden, such as these tomatoes. Some of my strawberries are of an everbearing variety, so I have a few small strawberries sometimes even at this time of year.

close up of some tomatoes on the plant in various shades of ripeness: red, yellow and orange.

I went to walk between the fields.

the dry wildflower field in the warm evening sunlight. there are some trees in the background. the sky is blue with many white puffy clouds.

a dried cluster inflorescence of a plant backlit by the evening sun.

the edge between two fields near sunset. one field has a thin cover of green plants on it, the other one is bare earth that looks freshly plowed. the sunset light is yellow and giving high contrast lighting to the clouds overhead.

trees with their roots holding onto the small stream's bank. the water appears greenish.

a group of tree trunks standing close together. the bark is striped. at the base of the trees is a pile of big old fallen tree branches.

a bunch of wild growing trees and shrubs by the side of a field. they have various shapes and thicknesses. the sun is setting behind them.

The secret spot is a good place to watch the sunset.

sunset in a small grove. two trees in the foreground are white barked birch trees. there are some fallen leaves on the ground that are tinted orange from the sunset light.

cloudy post sunset sky over the empty field. the horizon is tinted orange. there are willow branches in the foreground.
